Peirouniana, also found in older and local references as Pirouniana, is located in the hinterland of Heraklion Prefecture, near Agia Varvara, in a peaceful landscape with crops, springs, oak forests and small ravines. Far from the busy seaside destinations, the area maintains an authentic rural character and is an ideal spot for those who want to experience a quieter and more traditional side of Crete.

One of the most characteristic points of the area is the Byzantine church of Agios Georgios Khostos, next to the Axedianos River. The church is located in a lush green environment, while very close by there is an old watermill and the river forms small waterfalls and natural ponds. The location is one of the most beautiful spots for a short hike and contact with nature.

From Peirouniana also starts a path that leads to Axendi, the old abandoned settlement of the area. The route passes through oak forests, old watermills, carved wine presses and points with running water, before ending at the historic settlement. In Axendi, the church of the Holy Spirit stands out, which dates back to the 16th century. On its outer wall, the coat of arms of the Venetian Venier family is still preserved along with the date 1568, a particularly interesting remnant of the period of Venetian rule.

The area is particularly suitable for hiking and exploration, as around Peirouniana and Axendi there are old paths, Byzantine and Venetian monuments, watermills and carved wine presses that testify to the long-standing human presence in the area. A short distance away is also Agios Thomas, known for the numerous old chapels and carved monuments of the area.
